What the Bible Says About Healthy Living by Rex Russell, MD

I started out reading this book from the library and ended up buying a copy off of Amazon. Wow what a terrific journey this medical doctor has had getting his medical and Christian beliefs to come together. This is a wonderful easy to read book that shares one man, Rex Russell his faith and trying to get and maintain his family’s health. When medicine wasn’t able to answer his questions he turned to God. Dr. Russell uses tons of scripture as he winds us through his book. The book is divided into 3 parts: Part 1 – If we were created perfect, why are we sick?; Part 2 – The Three Principles for healthy eating; Part 3 – Dinner According to the Divine Design. I would recommend this book to any Christian who wants to get healthy and live closer what God intended for us.

It’s Not About Me by Max Lucado

Max Lucado is so easy to read. This is a refreshing quick read to put your life back in perspective. We are reminded that are bodies were bought with a price, valuable in that we use them to serve our Lord. My favorite snippets: Your body, God’s tool. Maintain it; and Your body, God’s temple. Respect it. Well worth your time to read. It will recharge you.

The Prayer Diet by Matthew Anderson, D.Min.

I picked this book up at the library thinking, you’ve got to be kidding, I am going to pray my way to a skinny new me. But I found this book inspiring. It reminds you that you are not in control, God is. And that we are to put things we can’t handle into his hands. This I needed to be reminded of because I am control freak. God uses our addictions for an opportunity for faith. (This approach is not unlike Alcoholics Anonymous). The author refers to God in many ways, I am not sure if this is his attempt at not offending anyone, or he truly isn’t referring to the God of the Bible. I did love the reminder that prayer gives us access to God and God has no limit. The author does give you a prayer that you are to pray multiple times a day and claims many have lost weight. Worth reading remembering there is only one God.

Living Healthy in a Toxic World by David Steinman and R. Michael Wisner

This is a scary book. Who realized there are so many toxins? Women who stay home are the most vulnerable to pollutants, scary. Makes you very aware of all the unnatural chemicals around us and makes you wonder if we are better off. There are some recipes for safe cleaning products and resources to check out and simple things you can do to protect yourself. So this book does provide some hope. Fun and enlightening to read.

The Bible’s Seven Secrets to Healthy Eating by Joyce Rogers

This book provides biblical insights into natural whole foods. The author explores, milk, whole grains, honey and more. And examines each biblical and nutritionally. I was motivated to watch for whole grains, research milk choices, the value of olive oil, and to watch that my meat choices line up with God’s design. This book is easy to read and provides lots of nutritional information. At the end the author provides 36 pages of recipes. I recommend reading this book.

The Maker’s Diet by Jordan S. Rubin

I picked up this book at Walmart thinking a Godly designed diet is what I needed. This book isn’t so much about easy to follow diet guidelines as it was a healing journey for a very sick young man. There is a liberal use of scripture verses. At the back of the book he gets to your 40 Day Health Experience. I didn’t follow this plan; it seemed too extreme for my commitment level. However I think the book was interesting to read and he followed a faith approach to his healing that inspired my faith.

Holy Cow! Does God Care About What We Eat? by Hope Egan

This is a very to easy to read book that establishes a sound basis for Christians to remain true to the Leviticus 11 food laws given by God. The author is a Jewish girl who believes Jesus is God’s son. She goes after the question of God’s design for our health with a completely open mind then she uses lots of scripture both old testament and new testament and delves into scripture context with well thought out logic to support her conclusions. Rex Russell wrote the forward to this book which automatically makes me curious to read. If you are feeling that you are having to defend some of your nutrition choices to family and friends this will provide you with an understanding of the scripture (new testament especially) to support your choices. I recommend this book.
